This easy recipe for Matcha Peppermint White Hot Chocolate is a fun and festive way to enjoy green tea and hot chocolate at the same time.

Mug of matcha peppermint white hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream.

Looking to add a little zing to your regular Matcha Latte?

    Why you'll love this recipe

My Matcha Peppermint White Hot Chocolate is an indulgent and festive way to enjoy a hot chocolate during the holidays.

I love pairing white chocolate and matcha together -- it helps to bring down the sweetness of the chocolate and adds an earthy flavour.

This is a simple and quick recipe that involves only 5 ingredients!

Mug of matcha hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream.

    5 ingredients you'll need

There are only 5 ingredients in this festive drink:

    • white chocolate: I like using white chocolate chips for ease and convenience, but you can use any white chocolate that you like (just be sure to chop the chocolate if it's a bar).
    • matcha: use a high quality matcha for the best taste and flavour
    • hot water: to dissolve the matcha powder and chocolate, about 80 degrees C
    • peppermint extract: a few drops give this hot chocolate a minty tingle; peppermint extract is strong so you definitely don't want to overdo it
    • milk: for a richer taste, use whole milk, but you can choose any milk or non-dairy alternative

    Optional add ons

    • mini marshmallows (try peppermint marshmallows for added minty zing!)
    • whipped cream
    • crushed candy cane

    How to make it

Place the white chocolate chips and matcha into a mug.

Add in the hot water and give it a stir to dissolve the white chocolate and matcha.

If you wish, you can use an electric frother to whisk the mixture.

Add in a few drops of peppermint extract (adjust to your liking). It's better to start with a few drops first and then add more if it's not strong enough.

Pour the warmed milk over the matcha and white chocolate mixture. Give it a quick stir.

Garnish with (peppermint) marshmallows and whipped cream. You can also brûlée the marshmallows if you wish.

    FAQs

What kind of matcha powder should I use?

Use the best quality matcha that you can find -- look for a matcha powder that is vibrant green and not dull yellow in colour. It should smell pleasant and slightly sweet.

Where can I find peppermint extract?

You can find peppermint extract online or in gourmet/specialty baking stores.

Sometimes regular grocery stores will carry peppermint extract during the holidays (in the baking section, along with vanilla extract).

    Can I use peppermint oil?

First, make sure the peppermint oil you have is culinary (food-grade). Do not use "essential" peppermint oil.

Culinary peppermint oil is much more concentrated, so you will need to decrease the amount (try 1 drop) to flavour the hot chocolate.

    How to brulee the marshmallows?

Carefully use a kitchen blow-torch to lightly torch the marshmallows.
