Hello, I'm Michelle!
Welcome to Sift & Simmer, where you'll find creative and modern Asian baking, matcha green tea recipes, traditional Chinese and Southeast Asian recipes.

I am the creator, writer, food photographer, recipe developer (and dishwasher!) behind Sift & Simmer.
Although not professionally trained, I have accumulated over 18 years of experience in the kitchen as an avid home cook and self-taught baker. Much of my culinary knowledge stems from my mother, who would cook delicious meals from scratch for our family every single day.
As a teenager, I would help her in the kitchen and observe how she would prepare ingredients. During the evenings, I would watch hours and hours of Food Network shows with her, going back to the days when Chef Emeril Lagasse would cook live on his TV show.
The inspiration for many of my recipes is deeply rooted in my background, drawing specifically from my Chinese and Southeast Asian heritage.
Why I started Sift & Simmer
Sift & Simmer started in 2017 as a compilation of Asian baking recipes with a creative modern twist that has continued to grow and evolve. Currently, I'm working through a collection of heirloom Chinese and Southeast Asian recipes, many of which my family has passed down to me. I've discovered through learning, cooking and sharing these recipes that food connects me to my cultural heritage.
It's my love of family and my family's love of food why I created Sift & Simmer. It's a space for me to create, share, and preserve culinary memories with my family, with a hope of passing it down to the next generation through my two boys (my resident taste-testers)!
If you love Chinese dim sum, Chinese bakery goods, Nyonya kuihs, laksa, and matcha chiffon cake, you're in the right place!
My culinary style
I'm always thinking about food, flavor and combinations. I draw inspiration not only from my heritage, but also from dining out at restaurants and travelling.
When it comes to Asian baking, I love experimenting with creative, bold, unique flavors. You'll find distinctive flavor combinations such as miso tahini, matcha pineapple, and sakura strawberry.
But when it comes to my Chinese and Southeast Asian recipes, I like to keep them more traditional, such as classic Chinese pork dumplings, sweet and sour pork, and prawn crackers (keropok).
I live in Canada, so you will find a smattering of Canadian/Western-style dishes, such as Tim Horton's fruit explosion muffins, homestyle donairs, and fusion dishes on the website.
