Taking inspiration from Vietnamese Egg Coffee, Pandan Latte, and my love for creamy durian in pancakes, this unique coffee drink is based on strong espresso flavored with the bold, sweet and creamy flavor of durian.
Why you'll love this recipe
This recipe for durian cream coffee is:
Easy to make: it's basically making a latte, topped with creamy durian.
Unique: for those looking for a different, tropical flavoring of coffee, this will fit the bill.
Adaptable: if you don't have freeze-dried durian, you can use pureed fresh or frozen durian. And if using fresh durian pulp, you can add it to the bottom of your serving glass to get an inverse layering.
How to make durian coffee
Make the durian cream:
Add freeze-dried durian to a spice grinder or food processor and blitz until it becomes a fine powder. Set aside.
Use an electric frother (or whisk) to whip up the heavy whipping cream until medium peaks.
Fold in the pulverized durian powder into the whipped cream until well-incorporated.

Assemble:
Add shots of espresso (or strong coffee/cold brew) to a serving glass.
Fill the glass with ice.
Pour in ½ C of milk.
Top with the durian cream.
Stick in a straw, give it a stir and enjoy immediately.

How to serve
Pair the durian coffee with other treats such as durian cream pancakes, durian mochi, or pandan durian roll cake.
Variations
If using fresh or frozen durian in place of freeze-dried, puree it in a blender until smooth and add the blended durian in to the whipped cream.
Blend the durian with ice, milk and coffee for a frappe variation.
For a cold foam version: add in 2 tablespoon whole milk to the heavy cream and whip to soft peaks.

Interesting! I had no idea durian could be used in coffee - but this makes total sense to me. To be fair, I wasn't exactly sure how durian was served. I just know it by the smell. 🙂 This sounds like a great mid-morning treat!

Hey David, this is definitely one of the more creative uses for durian! It makes sense since it's already sweet and creamy! 🙂

Now this is a a very creative recipe. Had not had a fresh durian in awhile but they always have durian ice cream at the Asian market.
Michelle
Thank you Bobbi! Fresh durian is really expensive nowadays, so I always opt for freeze-dried, which is so convenient to use 🙂 Mmm durian ice cream is always a good choice if you're a fan! 😀

I won't like - durian isn't my top 10 (or even 25) of my favourite fruit due to its peculiar flavour haha. But I admit this is a creative use of this fruit!
Michelle
Haha, durian is definitely not for everyone! 🙂
