What is black sesame?
Black sesame seeds have a stronger, nuttier flavor than white sesame seeds and are a staple in many East Asian desserts.
When ground, the black sesame seeds become a fragrant powder or paste that is commonly used in sweet dessert soups, rolls, cakes, and drinks.

Ingredients you'll need
- milk: or non-dairy alternative (eg. oat, soy, almond)
- black sesame powder: finely ground, or black sesame paste
- white chocolate: chopped, or chips
- sea salt: to balance the sweetness
- vanilla extract
Garnish: optional
- whipped cream
- toasted sesame seeds

How to make black sesame hot chocolate
In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium-low heat until steaming hot, but not boiling.
Whisk in the black sesame powder until fully combined.
Add in the white chocolate and stir until melted and smooth.
Add a pinch of sea salt to balance the sweetness, and a splash of vanilla extract.
Divide into two mugs and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds, if desired.


Expert tips
If you don't have black sesame powder, you can use grind toasted black sesame seeds. Use a spice grinder to blitz until a fine powder -- but be careful not to overgrind or it will turn into a paste.
Or, you can use black sesame paste.
Texture too thick? Add a splash of extra milk to thin it out to your preference.
White chocolate: couverture chocolate is best; just note if you're using white chocolate chips, it may take a little longer to melt completely.
