Why you'll love this recipe
I was inspired one night watching Jamie Oliver make these sesame fried eggs, which are different than the typical soy-marinated Asian eggs. His version is heavy on the hoisin sauce, but mine uses chili oil since I love spice!
Simple: it's an easy recipe that you can make using pantry ingredients you already have.
Minimal ingredients: only uses 4 ingredients.
Flavorful: the sesame seed crust adds a nutty flavor and crunchy texture to the eggs.
Ingredients you'll need
- sesame seeds: you can use white, black or a combination of both
- vegetable oil: prevents the eggs from sticking and helps crisp the edges
- large eggs: preferably organic, or free-range
- chili oil: optional, but adds additional flavor; you can use any chili oil/sauce that you like
- salt & pepper: to taste
How to cook Asian fried eggs
Heat a frying pan over low-medium heat.
Toss in sesame seeds and toast for about 30 seconds.
Add vegetable oil over the sesame seeds.
Crack eggs over the sesame seeds and cover the pan with the lid slightly ajar.
Let the eggs cook until desired doneness, about 4-5 minutes.
Use a spatula to gently release the egg.
Serve with additional sesame seeds and/or chili oil.

How to serve
Serve the Asian fried eggs on anything from steamed rice, egg noodles, rice noodles, instant noodles, scallion oil noodles, or avocado toast.
Enjoy at breakfast or lunch with sausage rounds, bacon, or sourdough.
Pair with a smoked salmon bagel, or swap it into a breakfast sandwich.
Optional additions
Take it up a notch and add crispy garlic or onions, chilies, chopped green onions/scallions, cilantro, bonito flakes, or furikake seasoning.
Expert tips
Cook the eggs on low-medium heat. This may take a little longer than your normal fried egg.
Do not cook the eggs on high heat as the sesame seeds will burn.
Not a fan of sunny-side eggs? You can make them over-easy and still have that sesame crusted edge.
Want more of a crust? Increase the amount of sesame seeds by ½ Tbsp.
