This Hojicha Matcha Affogato is a delicious way to enjoy 2 different teas in one creamy dessert. Thick matcha (koicha) is poured over roasted green tea ice cream.

Bowl of hojicha ice cream with matcha sauce drizzled over top, spoon on side on a plate.
Summer's finally here and I can't think of a better way than to have my matcha in some type of iced form.

You'll know I already have a Matcha Affogato on the blog made with vanilla ice cream, but if you haven't had matcha's cousin, hojicha -- you'll definitely have to check this Hojicha Matcha Affogato out.

A traditional affogato is based on the Italian dessert which is ice cream "drowned" with coffee.

Instead of coffee, this version has a vibrant koicha matcha, which is a thick matcha.

Pouring matcha over top of a glass of hojicha ice cream on top of marble coasters, spoon on side, tea packaging in background.
    What is hojicha?

Hojicha is a roasted green tea that has a smoky, aromatic flavour.

You can read more about my love of hojicha in my Hojicha Milk Jam post.

When paired with koicha, the earthiness from the matcha balances the rich smokiness from the hojicha.

    What is koicha?

Koicha is just a thick paste of matcha and water.

All you need is Aiya Culinary Grade Matcha and a tiny bit of water.

Whisk together, and you've got a thick matcha.

    Super easy, right?

Bowl of hojicha ice cream with matcha sauce drizzled over top, tea packaging, spoon on side on a plate, tea powder in small dish, ice cream scoop.
My Hojicha Affogato has a base of homemade roasted hojicha ice cream.

Let the homemade hojicha ice cream freeze overnight, you've got a rich, flavourful ice cream that you can enjoy alone, or paired with matcha, like I've done here.

    How to make it

    • scoop hojicha ice cream into a bowl
    • drizzle thick matcha over top
    • serve

    How easy is that?!

Cold and creamy, flavourful ice cream with warm matcha drizzled over top gives this Hojicha Matcha Affogato a delicious sensation in your mouth. Be sure to eat this dessert as soon as you make it.

Have you tried matcha and hojicha together before?

    It's a matcha made in heaven! 😉

This recipe looks AMAZING. I also love making no churn ice cream with heavy whipping cream + condensed milk. Works every time! I will need to try it with the tea bags. Thanks for sharing!
