What is banh mi?
Banh mi is most commonly known as a Vietnamese cold cut sandwich.
However, banh mi can refer to either the baguette (Vietnamese bread) or the sandwich.
Vietnamese banh mi usually consists of cold cut meats, including cha lua (rolled pork), pork liver pâté, topped with pickled carrot and pickled daikon radish (known as do chua), fresh cucumber, jalapeños and cilantro.
Why you'll love this recipe

Minimal prep: cooking the hotdogs and preparing the vegetables is all you need to do for this recipe.
Quick and delicious: these hotdogs make for a scrumptious lunch, snack or dinner.
What is a hot dog?
A hot dog is similar to banh mi in that the term "hot dog" can can refer to the sausage, which is a mixture of meat with fat and seasonings, filled into a casing and formed into a long cylindrical shape.
Or, the term "hot dog" can refer to the sandwich itself, consisting of the bun and the grilled or steamed sausage.
Hot dog sausages can be made from beef, pork, chicken, turkey or a combination of meats.
They're different than Chinese sausages (lap cheong), which are thinner, drier and darker in color.
Ingredients you'll need
- hot dog sausages/wieners: you can use beef or pork hotdogs
- hot dog buns
- do chua (Vietnamese pickled daikon radish and carrot); adds a sweet and tangy texture and crunch to the hot dogs

- fresh cilantro: omit if you don't like cilantro
- jalapeños: omit, if you don't like spicy
- sriracha: a mild chili sauce; or add a little mayo to it to make a quick sriracha mayo to drizzle on top of the hot dogs
