What is butter chicken pizza?
Butter chicken pizza is a Indian-style fusion recipe consisting of creamy butter chicken baked on naan.
What is butter chicken?
Butter chicken (also known as murgh makhani) is a popular Indian dish of marinated tandoori chicken pieces cooked in a creamy, tomato-based spiced curry sauce.
Why you'll love this recipe
A classic pizza consists of baked dough with a sauce (typically tomato) and various toppings.
This Indian/Italian fusion works well as the butter chicken sauce is tomato-based and the round naan works in place of pizza dough and acts as the pizza crust.
It's a great way to use up any leftover butter chicken you may have.
Using store-bought butter chicken sauce makes this chicken pizza recipe really easy and simple.
The smaller individual sizes make these Indian chicken pizzas great as personal pizzas.
Ingredients you'll need
Butter chicken: (you can also use leftover butter chicken if you have that on hand)
- chicken breast: skinless/boneless; you can also use chicken thighs if you prefer
- Greek yogurt: thick, full-fat; helps tenderize the chicken
- butter chicken sauce: you can make your own, or use store-bought jarred sauce; for simplicity and ease, I used a jarred sauce
For the pizzas:
- naan: each shaped into 7-8" rounds; or you can use store-bought; alternatively you can also use regular pizza dough/crusts
- red onion: sliced thinly
- shredded mozzarella cheese: you can also use fresh mozzarella or any melty cheese you prefer
- chopped cilantro: optional
Where to find?
You can find these ingredients at large supermarkets with an International aisle.

How to make butter chicken pizza
Make the quick butter chicken:
In a bowl, marinate the chicken breast with Greek yogurt and ¼ C butter chicken sauce.
Place the chicken on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
Broil the chicken (about 6-7" away from the top element) for about 8-10 minutes per side, flipping halfway through, or until the thickest part reaches an internal temperature of 165F.
Remove from heat and cover with a piece of foil. Let it rest for 10 minutes before cutting into smaller pieces.
Heat up the remaining ¼ C butter chicken sauce in a small saucepan until warmed through and add the chicken pieces to it.
Assemble the pizza:
Spread a thin layer of butter chicken sauce over the surface of the naan.
Portion out the cooked butter chicken pieces.
Sprinkle on cheese and red onion.
Repeat with the remainder.
Place onto a baking sheet and bake at 450F for 5-8 minutes, or until cheese is melted and naan is slightly crisp.
Remove from heat and garnish with chopped cilantro.
Serve immediately.

How to serve
Serve the butter chicken pizza warm or at room temperature.
Pair with side dishes such as Aloo Sabzi (Dry Indian-Spiced Potatoes), samosas or pakoras.
How to store & reheat
Store any butter chicken naan pizza leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheat leftover pizza in the microwave or in a 350F oven until the naan crisps up, about 5-10 minutes.
Notes & substitutions
Depending on how much seasoning is in your butter chicken sauce, you may need to add a little salt to the chicken.
You can change it up and use chicken tikka masala, or for a less saucy version, use chicken tikka pieces.
For a vegetarian version, try adding chana masala (chickpea curry).
Easily batch up and double or triple the recipe to make more.
Bake each Indian-style pizza individually on a pizza stone or pizza steel for best results.
